| I am not a hero, but my son was and is. On Memorial Day, 2001 he threw his hat into the air at the Air Force Academy. He ran into the stands and said, "We did it Ma!" Derek never took any credit for his accomplishments, but always used the word we. On Memorial Day of 2005, I got the call that his plane went down in Iraq. He was a Special Operations Warrior and flying that day on a small Iraqi Aircraft. He was one of four Americans on the plane and one Iraqi that was fighting for a better Iraq for his family. Derek is buried in Arlington with the only Iraqi soldier in Arlington. I will be riding my motorcycle 6,000 miles this summer for the children of those heroes like my son. Derek's son will be four years old this month. I will be riding to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation that will provide a FULL college education for my grandson and the other 727 children of fallen Spec Ops Warriors. I believe that the children whose fathers laid thier lives at the alter of freedom, have been forgotten. There are thousands of packages for the troops programs, and thousands of new non-profits that have sprung up during this war. Very few families see any of the money they raise. |
